Here’s two of the Kate Greenaway titles that were shortlisted. Of these our favourite was ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ which has gone through to the newest shortlist so we’re not far off the general opinion!

The Kate Greenaway Award website says this of the judgement criteria:

The CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book
in terms of illustration for children and young people.

So it should be noted that the priority is to look at the illustration rather than the content necessarily. That said, I think that ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’ is a good story too. My daughter (who is 9 years old) loves this so much she likes reading it out loud and giving the crayons different voices to match their characters. We loved it so much that when we had to take the library book back after renewing it 6 times we decided to buy our own copy.

We’ve also read ‘The Paper Dolls’ which is on the current shortlist – we loved this one too so will get it out of the library again and might even get round to writing a report on the blog.

Here are my notes on ‘The Day the Crayons Quit’, ‘Cheese Belongs to You’, ‘The Crocodile Who Didn’t Like Water’, and ‘This is Not My Hat’.
