6Music listeners vote Green Man as ‘Best Festival’!

Not surprisingly, considering the brilliant line-up, listeners on 6Music’s Steve Lamacq’s show voted Green Man as the ‘Best Festival’ last week. Being a 6Music listener, and also three times visitor to Green Man this was no surprise! I had a couple of conversations whilst there with 6Music listeners and it was generally remarked that the line-up was “very 6Music”.

Yes, this is real…

This year’s line up included 6Music favourites Midlake (oh yes – been waiting for years to see these guys), Band of Horses, Ben Howard, This is the Kit, Public Service Broadcasting, British Sea Power, and Local Natives amongst many other superb bands. The mix of world music, folk, jazz, and general brilliant musicianship in the Chai Wallah tent is entertainment enough without the excellent Walled Garden line-up (the prettiest stage with the best roast chicken patronised by Patti Smith herself, and superb bar. There’s the Far Out stage, and new this year, Green Man Rising showcasing the newest bands on the scene – more on these in later posts.  Plenty of other attractions, for kids, for teens (a new area this year), and the most beautiful location for a festival, plus the loveliest people! Also, Einstein’s garden, a cinema, literary tent, and of course loads of green stuff like cycling to charge your phone, and setting fire to the Green Man statue (a bit Wicker Man but less sinister…)

Not to mention the food:

Patti Smith headlined on Saturday night – an excellent start from this feisty singer who still has the most amazing voice and an attitude to match. On violin was the brilliant Patrick Wolf.

This year’s festival had some great improvements in the accessibility for everyone. There were more tracks laid down in case of mud – which thankfully wasn’t a problem due to the gorgeous weather; viewing platforms at most of the stages for disabled festival goers, and more disabled toilets near each stage. Sadly some problems with a lack of stewards turning up (apparently loads were booked but didn’t arrive)  which caused issues with access to the platforms for those who really needed to use them.

NB. Brilliant idea to put fairy lights inside the toilets – a pretty touch and better for safety too!
