An excellent way to get children excited about books and writing is to organise a ‘Meet the Author’ event. I’ve attended two of these at the local primary school, both organised by a children’s bookshop in Eastbourne – Mr and Mrs Doak’s Bumper Bookshop. The first was with author Philip Ardagh (see my very first post – Meeting with Magnificently-bearded author Philip Ardagh)

The most recent one was with the author H.L. Dennis who wrote the Secret Breakers novel, The Power of Three. Her visit to the school involved a special assembly where the children got to learn about code-breaking, and followed by a book-signing session. Helen Dennis has her own website and as part of this a section about organising school visits. She is herself, a Primary School teacher and also provides a PDF leaflet with a guide on reading The Secret Breakers series (the second book in the series is out now: The Orphan of the Flames) which works with the current school curriculum. My daughter enjoyed meeting Helen Dennis so much she wanted me to buy a book to be signed!
